If you have never kept a journal, it might feel daunting, but in fact, it will turn out to be a wonderful source of inspiration and will help you cultivate positive thoughts on a daily basis.
Let’s first establish the king of journal you need. You may not realise but they are a wide range of journals for you to keep, depending on your lifestyle, personal history and personality, one journal might be more suited you than another. Choosing well from the start, will keep you motivated in writing as keeping a journal should not feel like a task or a chore, but like a rejuvenating source of inspiration. You will want to keep writing on a daily basis and soon enough, you will start feeling the positive impact it has on you. You will focus more on the positive of the day, have the time to better analyse what has happen in your day. You will start feeling happier and more optimistic.
A gratitude journal
It is easy to be overwhelmed during the day, stress, work and family responsibilities; it is easy to get caught in the routine of life and forgetting about all the good thing in the day that has happened.
A gratitude journal is a fantastic tool to fight depression and repress negative thoughts as it helps you focus on what is good in your life. You do not need to spend a lot of time, simply write a few things you were grateful today. It can be as simply as today I am grateful for the walk I took with my colleague during lunch. You can expand as much as you want, describing why it felt good, how the fresh air impacted you, the ray of sunshine, the light breeze caressing your face. Elaborating on why you are grateful allows you to really explore your feelings.
A personal development journal
Writing is the best way to identify the things in your life that you want to improve so you can build on it. Your personal journal is all about changes. You should start identifying where you are in your life, where you want to go, what you plan on doing to get there. Writing down your goals will allow you to better focus on the tasks needed and achieve better results and concentrate your energy on what matters most for you. You can record where you are with each task.
Bullet journal is a customizable organizing system. With a big touch on creativity, you can create the journal the way you want, using pictures, drawings. You can have as many category as needed (Note, tasks, to do list, dreams of the day, gratitude of the say, observations etc..). It can help you develop your creativity while being supper organized.
Do not wait for the right time to write; otherwise you will end up missing out. Keep your journal with you and record the joyful experience straight away if you can. Like that at bedtime, you can quickly go through it and realize all the great things that have actually happened to you today. This will reinforce your positive state of mind getting you ready for bed.
At the beginning of each day, weeks, months or even semesters, simply list the various tasks you would like to accomplish. I, myself, use a planning journal a lot and prepare the list of articles I would like to write this month for each category. You soon will realize you actually do not spend that much time mapping out everything, and life seems so much easier when you know exactly what you have to do and when. Breaking down a monumental task over months and fragmenting it into multitudes of very small task will not defeat you, little by little you get near your main goal and in the end you will realize how little effort it took.
Record your adventures to bring to life the wonderful memories of places you have been. You can describe the best places you have been, put a personal description of a site that really spoke to you. Lists of people you met, contact details of those you want to keep in touch with. Impressions, sensations, odors, views, everything that thrilled you and got all sort of emotions bubbling inside you. Rediscover those sensations when back home by browsing through your travel journal. Why not add little drawings, leaflet of monuments, national parks, or anything as simple as a ticket from a show. You do not have to write a lot; sometimes just a simple sentence will summarize the experience of the day just as well.
